Honeywell RTH7500D Conventional 7-Day Programmable Thermostat Review

Honeywell RTH7500D Conventional 7-Day Programmable Thermostat

Easy to install and programming buttons are easy to understand. It is the display that is difficult to understand. Be very careful about the check mark before the days of the week. When you make a temperature input it will apply to EVERY day that has a check mark and erase what you previously inputted. You have to cycle through the days twice to eliminate the CHECK marks for the other days to enter in data for just one day.
There is room on the display to show you all your heating or cooling temperature settings for each day of the week, but they neglected to provide this so it is very difficult to review your inputs to be sure they are right and to correct for CHECK mark errors from above.

The mobile home I live in has no heat or AC, so I thought this would be a good way to supply both. Though it was very heavy and hard to move, unless you are on a hard floor where the casters can work, I managed to get it all hooked up. Things went well for the first couple of weeks and then I don't know what happened, but every morning that I use it I find that the little tray that sits underneath the unit and catches the water, when you open the drain plug, is filled to overflowing and I must empty it and wipe up the floor around it. This happens whether I have the little rubber plug they supplied pushed into the hole or I have the screw on plug put on as it seems to leak from underneath the unit itself. I am very happy that I was sort of forced into putting it in a room that had a vinyl floor!
I have tried emptying the accumulated water before retiring and leaving it unemptied - neither works. I called Soleus and was put on hold - they said I was 9th in line and would be on hold for about 11 minutes; about 40 minutes later a man came on to tell me that they would call me back; that was a week ago! I turned the unit over to see if I could gain access to the inside and see what was up, but that didn't work either.
I hesitate to return it as I was barely able to get it from my porch to where I wanted it and I know I couldn't get it into a vehicle to send it back; not to mention that the packaging is gone and that it cost me $60.00 to have it sent and would be near that to return it. I guess I have resigned myself to cleaning up after it each morning.

Peerless 76154 1.6 GPM Water-Amplifying Showerhead, Chrome Review

Peerless 76154 1.6 GPM Water-Amplifying Showerhead, Chrome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have lower water pressure (about 62 psi) and tested many lower flow, mater amping shower heads. Alsons makes many of these with the big companies putting their names on them. This is the same technology as the Delta 1.6 but cosmetically different. You can find the Peerless in the Wal mart around me.
This head put the most pressure out for the money. Nearly 15-21 psi more than the 2.5 gpm heads!
It does use less water than a 2.5 and gives a pretty decent shower. It will be more than enough to blast soap and conditioner off of your body and hair.
The large hole will make it less likely to clog if you have hard water. The action is more like a side to side shake combined with a pulse so you get body coverage with force.
This is different than what you might be used to since it is not a needle spray but larger drops of water. Some think these mist but I do not see that effect. It does spray different than what most have so takes a few showers to really know if you like this way of presenting water to your body.
It s one draw back is that it might have to much force. I am male and my first thought was it was good but mixed with little stings mixed in. However I do think in a week your body would get used to it.
For the low cost if you are looking to boost pressure and save water, you should try this by going to your local store and seeing if you can find it to try it out.
If you want to spend about $24 you can buy from Amazon the 1.6 version by Alsons with 4 holes that use this technology. Over all it solves all the issues. It will give you wider coverage, and the pressure is divided between all 4 holes. You do get about 10 psi LESS pressure because of the 4 holes so there is no sting. For some reason that one uses a little more water even though they are both 1.6 rated.
If looking for low cost, lower water use, high pressure, this one is hard to beat for the money.

CADET 13104 EBHA Softheat Permanent Baseboard Heater 240V 1500W White Sand 83" (EBHA1500WS) Review

I needed to replace an existing electric baseboard heater because the open design was simply too dangerous for my babies bedroom. Toys kept winding up in the open top and getting burnt.
The hydronic heater is probably about ten times the cost of a non-hydronic heater, but in my case it was definitely worth it for the following reasons:
- The top is pretty well closed off, it is much less likely objects are going to get inside and burn.
- The temperature of the heating elements is about half that of a non-hydronic heater, which makes me feel much safer.
- Comfort level is far, far, far superior to the non-hydronic heaters. The temperature of the room stays consistent, whereas with the non-hydronic heaters it gets cold within minutes of the heat shutting off. The consistency is due to the fluid chamber holding the heat after the power has shut off.
- It is silent. The standard electric heaters creak and bang when they heat up, which is annoying in any bedroom. This heater is dead quiet. For this reason I want to upgrade the heaters in every bedroom to hydronic.
I'll also point out that my experience buying this from Ace was excellent. The unit they shipped me arrived with a big hole in the box, and the front metal panel was badly scratched and dented. When I contacted customer support, they immediately shipped me a replacement panel with zero hassle. For this reason I'd want to buy from them again even if I found a lower price for the same unit somewhere else.
The only potential negative to this unit is the fact that you can only do the wiring on the left side. Of course as luck would have it, my old unit was wired on the right side so I had to go through the hassle of running wire through the wall to the other end of the unit.

General Information: Cadet's premier hydronic baseboard line is recommended for nurseries and bedrooms, and for people with severe allergies. While Softheat offers everyone a comfortably warm room, it was specifically designed to reduce the effects of indoor allergens, compared to other heating systems. Additional benefits include lower operating and surface temperatures and whisper quiet operation. The Softheat hydronic baseboard uses circulating fluid (80% water and 20% Ethylene Glycol) to provide steady, uniform warmth with longer heat retention and minimal temperature variation. No plumbing necessary! Cadet recommends a wall-mounted thermostat for optimum performance, or you may prefer the convenience of an optional field mount thermostat kit (Left end wiring only). Technical Information: Heater is constructed of 22 gauge steel for durability and powder coated for a quality finish. Baseboard heaters work best when placed under a window and at least 12" from furniture or other objects. Keep at least 12" minimum from objects hanging above (i.e., drapes). Heater may be placed directly on the floor and mounted to the wall. (Left end wiring only). Ordering Information: SOFTHEAT EBHA heaters require a thermostat. For optimum comfort use a Cadet electronic thermostat or a dual diaphragm thermostat

Hunter 42999 Just Right Digital Thermostat Review

Hunter 42999 Just Right Digital Thermostat

(More customer reviews)
Winter weather has finally hit mid-state Illinois! I have been prepared and had the furnace all ready to go. My family returned home on Thanksgiving to a cold house. My old mechanical round style thermostat had finally failed (it had been acting up in the recent days).
I was a little nervous having to select a new thermostat and even more nervous about installing it. I'm not a real hands-on person with regard to home repair. But we were in a real need for something.
I picked this unit up very late on Thanksgiving night and proceeded to take it home (don't forget the 2 AA batteries). This unit was replacing an old round mechanical style thermostat in my home. The box says it would be a workable replacement solution and it was.
Installation was very simple (thank goodness I only have a 2-wire heating only system). I removed the old thermostat from the wall and removed the two wires (after powering off my system) from the old thermostat base. I followed the instructions that came with the Hunter unit (there are several easy to read wiring diagrams for the different heating/cooling systems) and attached the wires to the new base of the Hunter unit (after attaching it to the wall). The terminals are easy to read and hooking up the new one was snap. I attached the main unit to the wall base and installed the batteries. I followed the instructions to set the desired temperature and haven't had a need to touch it since. I had this unit fully installed in about 15 minutes (remember I'm slow since I'm new to this). Even for me this was easy to install properly. This unit will replace many thermostat styles and will control most heating/cooling systems (a full list is available on the package). Even better the factory default settings were the right ones to control my 2-wire gas hot water baseboard furnace.
The Hunter functions very well. Last night the outside temperatures dipped into the mid twenties while my family and I remained comfortable and warm inside. I have other thermometers (digital) in the house and the Hunter keeps the room temperature within 1 degree Fahrenheit from the set level regardless of how cold or windy it is outside. Something my old mechanical thermostat could never do.
The features of this unit are nice. The LCD screen is easy to read. The buttons are large and easy to use. The unit has a slim profile and looks nice on the wall (shouldn't be too noticeable in any room). The mode selection buttons and other controls are neatly hidden behind an easy to open swing out door on one side of the LCD display while the batteries are behind a similar door on the other side (no need to remove thermostat to replace batteries)! Operating instructions are neatly printed on the inside of the door housing the controls for easy access eliminating the need to search for the instruction manual later. I also appreciate the fact that the thermostat is electronically controlled and the unit doesn't have to be perfectly level to function correctly. This unit has functioned without problems and has been worry free for me and has kept my family warm and comfortable.
*** UPDATE 11-11-08 ***
We've recently moved to a new house and the Hunter served us well all year at the old place. It functions well and keeps the house comfortable. The batteries last a long, long time (a year plus).
I've just installed the identical thermostat in our new home to replace another round mechanical thermostat. This new home has a heat/cool forced air system where the old house was baseboard water heat. Again the thermostat installed very easily with the added wire diagrams. Installation is quite simple and the thermostat is easy to set up (just a matter of flipping a switch and adjusting the set point (one button).
I highly recommend this thermostat for an economical efficient means to ensure comfort for your home and family. The Hunter provided a noticeable energy savings on my old home, and I'm sure it will on this one too. Again, highly recommended!

Honeywell HE360A Whole House Powered Humidifier Review

Honeywell HE360A Whole House Powered Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed the HE360A onto a new Ruud 95%+ high-efficiency dual-stage heating and cooling system and I'm controlling the unit with a Ritetemp 6080 thermostat. The humidifier works beautifully, and based upon my research with heating and cooling specialists, this unit is optimally-designed to conserve power and to protect the heating and cooling system. Bypass units (that use a piece of ducting connecting the return and supply sides of the system) rob the heating system's efficiency and will push moist air through the system. Installing this unit on the supply side of the ductwork ensures that all of the humidified air will be moved into the home, not back into the system. While this design does use more water than some other units, the savings in power and the increased efficiency of the unit will minimize its financial impact. By the way, I attached the unit to a hot water supply, not cold, as this helps the moisture to be absorbed into the heated air.
The newer Honeywell humidifiers create steam to humidify the air. While this is probably optimal for humidification purposes and should minimize the amount of water used, the amount of electricity these systems use to create the steam will definitely impact your pocketbook. From a "green" perspective, I find that water is a cheaper and more renewable resource than electrical power. The old-fashioned drum humidifier units will save water, but use a holding tray of water to soak a pad that the air travels through. If not cleaned thoroughly and often, they develop mold and mildew and that will get circulated through your house... a very dangerous and unhealthy option.
Installing this unit did prove a bit of a challenge because of it's combination with the Ritetemp 6080 electronic thermostat, which includes a humidistat. Most online "experts" say that the HE360 units won't work with this kind of thermostat/humidistat because of incompatible electrical design of the two systems. However, I'm a firm believer that anything is possible with enough research and who doesn't like a challenge? To make this work, I purchased a small 24VAC SPDT relay from Grainger, part number 4A708 (about $15) and did NOT use the installation kit recommended for the humidifier or the humidistat that was provided with the unit. Since my air handler provides 24VAC to the thermostat and the thermostat interally provides settings to determine when the humidifier will run, I used the relay to control power to the 120VAC side of the system which acts as a switch to turn the entire humidifier on and off. To accomplish this, I installed a new electrical circuit and outlet to be used solely by the humidifer. I installed the relay inside an electrical box to control the power to this outlet. Using low voltage wiring I connected the relay to the "C"ommon contact on the air handler and to the "H"umidifier wire from the thermostat. I then used a wire nut to connect the two yellow wires on the HE360, which basically sets the unit "on" any time it has power. When the air handler is running in heat mode and the thermostat determines that humidification is required, the relay is powered and provides 120VAC power to the outlet and the humidifier is turned on. When the relay loses power, the 120VAC is turned off that the HE360 shuts off. The thermostat can be set to work two ways: to run the humidifier and the air handler's blower anytime when the humidistat says that humidity is required, or to run the humidifier only when the air handler is in heat mode and the blower is running and humidity is required. I could have directly wired this unit to the air handler's power, but I chose to use the outlet so that I could unplug the unit in an emergency or for service.
I strongly recommend this unit... I've tried several of whole house units over the last 20 years and this is the first that really works. I've already helped others to install these units on their HVAC systems and all of them work great, none have had any problems and all are amazed at the difference the humidifier makes in their homes.
