Seisco 28 Kw Electric Micro Boiler (95,560 Btu) for Hydronic Space Heating Review

These hot water heaters work GREAT -- while they work! They make plenty of hot water and save money month-to-month over the standard hot water heater because they make only the hot water that you use and don't keep re-heating a tank full of hot water. The PA-28 unit here made enough hot water for a household with six children including bath/shower water, dishwasher and washing machine. PLUS, we heated the house with the hot water through plastic pipes in the floor. Never once, while it was working, did we want for hot water.
HOWEVER, they don't last very long. Since 2001, when we had the first one installed, we've had to replace the unit twice. Now, Nov 2010, the one we have has failed and needs to be replaced again! The first two times the housing surrounding the heating elements cracked, causing leaking and water damage (not covered by Seisco). This time, the electronics board seems to have gone bad.
I'M NOT SAVING ANY MONEY ANY MORE. Since the original warranty is long gone, I'm stuck having to replace the unit every 2 to 3 years. Not good.
My experience anyway....

STIEBEL ELTRON Accelera 300 80G Electric Water Heater Review

STIEBEL ELTRON Accelera 300 80G Electric Water Heater
Average Reviews:

We did a lot of research when determining what type of hot water heater we wanted. Our main goal was to be able to disconnect the tankless coil on our oil boiler. Why disconnect the tankless? First of all, it belched fumes into our back yard all year long. Nothing would make me madder than trying to enjoy the back yard on a warm summer's day and having to smell fumes because the darned boiler came on to heat up residential hot water. The other thing I don't like about tankless boilers is that they are very inefficient. That's reason number 2 for switching hot water systems - to save money. Third of all, using less fossil fuel is good for the environment and that's important to us. Some friends were skeptical when we said we were getting an electric hot water heater, but I don't think they understand how this thing works. It's not your father's electric hot water heater. You might wonder how a device that uses, for example, a joule of energy could possibly produce 2.5 joules of heat. But it is possible if the device is merely moving heat from point A to point B. That's what the Stiebel Eltron does, and does very well. It does have a backup heating element for situations in which the compressor is not able to provide enough heat by itself, but most of the time, the heating element is not used.
So how does it work? Great! The water is piping hot and, owing to the large 80 gallon capacity, there is always plenty of hot water even for our 5-person family. It wasn't cheap, but it is a qualified purchase for the $1500 federal energy efficiency tax credit. So whatever you pay for it, you'll get $1500 back at tax time.
We positioned ours in the basement, close to the boiler, so that it can use some of the standby-loss heat that the boiler would otherwise waste. This does bring up one thing that you should be aware of - this unit will indeed make your basement colder. It's basically like having a window air conditioner running in your basement. Our basement isn't frigid, because the basement walls, being as they are underground, really buffer temperatures anyway. But it's definitely a little chillier down there than it was before we installed the Stiebel.
As for the bottom line... well first of all, don't underestimate how much it will cost to install this unit. We had a certified installer perform the work for us and the bill came to around $6500. After the tax credit, it's more like $5000. We were able to get a zero percent energy efficiency loan sponsored by the state of MA (I've been told other states have similar programs), so we're paying about $50 per month to own it. So are we saving $50 per month in fuel oil? Probably... it's a little hard to say just yet, as we've only had it for a few months. We won't really know for sure until we've had it for a year or more and can compare our year to year oil usage. One thing I will say though, is that the hit to our electric bill has been negligible. We really haven't noticed any increase in our electric bill at all. Maybe a couple bucks. We calculated that the unit will pay for itself in about 6 years... time will tell if those calculations are accurate.
I think it will really start to pay for itself next spring. I plan on turning the oil boiler off as soon as it warms up in the spring and not turning it on again until it gets cold again in autumn. Zero oil usage all summer! (Side note, an oil guy once told me that you shouldn't turn the boiler off for extended periods of time because the gaskets might crack... others I've spoken to say that's poppycock. It sounds pretty doubtful to me, and frankly, I don't really trust oil salesmen, so I plan on turning it off next summer and we'll see what happens).
So in summary... no regrets so far. Works great, plenty of hot water, barely a blip on the electric bill. Gotta love it.

My electrician recommended the RA32. I have 3 teenagers and live in an all electric neighborhood. Needless to say, I never got a hot shower. Now everyone gets plenty of hot water, including me. We had company at the house and everyone was amazed that they had enough hot water. I am recommending Seisco to all my neighbors. Six months now, and I am saving over 24% on my electric bill to boot. Goodbye heavy, smelly tank. Hello hot water

Stiebel Eltron DHCE 10 Electric Tankless Water Heater, 240V, 9.6 kW Review

Average Reviews:

I've put up with years with having to run the hot water at my kitchen sink for 3 minutes before I got hot water, which was actually only warm. I live in a house where the water heater, powered by propane, is about 40 feet from the kitchen. I installed the DHCE-10 in a weekend myself, it fit on the back wall right under the sink. The hardest part was running the 40 amp circuit over a 60 foot run for the power. Plumbing wasn't bad, this unit uses the cold water for the inlet, I turned off the hot water valve under the sink and capped it off and teed into the cold water line. The outlet side of the heater is teed, one to the hot water inlet on the faucet, one to the dishwasher.
Before having the DHCE-10 I would have to keep the propane heater turned almost as high as it would go so the water would be hot at the kitchen sink. There was a fair amount of temperature drop over a 40 foot run in a slab foundation. After powering up the DHCE-10, I had 120 degree water at my kitchen sink in 3 seconds, amazing. The first thing I did was turn my propane heater down to low, just warm enough for showers in the baths, which are in close proximity to the propane heater. Another benefit is my dishwasher is now cleaning the dishes more effectively with 120 degree water which is what is recommended.
As for the heater itself, it is well constructed, compact, simple and easy to set. There is a dial on the front which adjusts the water temperature from off to 125 degrees. The unit is self limiting to a max of 125. The ambient temperature of the water going into the unit is 50 degrees, (I live in the South, test done in winter), my flow rate is 1.3 gallons per minute at my sink. The unit heats the water instantly to 120 degrees. The unit only consumes power when the water is turned on, there is a flow detection switch that powers up the unit when water flows through it. It turns off instantly when the water flow stops. Can't get any more efficient than that. If you live in an area where you're ambient water temperature is lower, it may be necessary to reduce the flow at the faucet to achieve the desired outlet temperature, or install one of Stiebel Eltron's larger or smaller units, they have a variety of sizes depending on your needs. The hot water temperature is relative to your flow rate and the ambient temperature of your cold water. The Stiebel Eltron web site has graphs and recommendations for your area.
I've been using the unit for a month now, I've monitored my propane usage, it has dropped dramatically. Prior to installing the unit we would turn on the hot water at the sink for washing hands and rinsing dishes, it usually didn't run long enough to actually get any hot water but it did run long enough to cause the propane heater to cycle on to reheat the water in the tank. I've seen no appreciable rise in my electric bill so far. I would expect the unit to pay for itself over it's lifespan.
I highly recommend this unit, I chose it over competitive units for it's warranty, quality and reputation. All copper internal components, quality switches and connectors. If I were to ever build a house I would install these units in each bath and the kitchen sink instead of having a tank style heater that cycles on and off whether or not you use any hot water. I would prefer this style unit over a whole house tankless heater also, as these install right at or near the the point of use eliminating the long runs resulting in temperature drops.

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 29 Plus Electric Tankless Water Heater Review

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 29 Plus Electric Tankless Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those who don't know, Stiebel Eltron make the best electric tankless heaters on the market. They have the digital thermostat, and it will keep your water to the exact temperature you set regardless of demand. I set mine to 106'F and it is exactly 106'F, regardless of if I have just 1 tap open or 5 plus a shower, dishwasher, etc...
As for installation it was fairly basic. Just an in and out for the plumbing and the electrical was fairly straightforward. You need 3 x 60A 208-204V lines plus a ground. That means 6 spaces in your breaker panel. This is the biggest electric tankless that can go on a 200A service. Anything larger and you need a 400A service. I am a licensed electrician so instalation was simple for me. Otherwise I would definitely hire an electrician to do the hookup. It can be intimidating to do the electical yourself with all the options. Do you use flex, tech cable, just plain old lumex, etc... I piped mine in using EMT and #6 wire, although you only need #8.
Construction quality is top notch. The manual is excellent. And it works like a charm. It is capable of giving 140'F scalding water just like a regular storage tank. But I set mine to 106'F; the temperature I want for taking a shower. I just turn the hot water faucet on and I get the exact tempature I want. No need to play with the cold water to get the temperature I want. No more fluctuations in temperature when a toilet, washer, or dishwasher kicks in while taking a shower. No need to have expensive mixing valves or temperature regulators. Also you eliminate the need of draining your storage tank every year or 2 and cleaning it out, replacing annode rods, or just waiting for it to leak and flood your basement after 10 years so you can replace it or call the power company to have a replacement rental installed.
I have a water softener as well so there should be no maintenance issues with the tankless. I am expecting a 30+year life cycle. I figure the cost of a good 12year storage water heater is around $500-600. This tankless water heater was [...]. But it will last 30 years as opposed to 15 years with a storage tank so it actually cvomes out to [...] for 2 storage tanks as opposed to [...] for the tankless. I save [...] in the long run. I also don't need temperature regulators or expensive faucets on my shower so I save money there. The tankless is also more efficient so I save a little bit again there. It all adds up. Also the maintenance of a hot water storage tank is a pain. And the risk of it leaking and flooding unless you replace it every 10 years even if it still works. Also it's no good to cook with hot water from a storage tank because of all the built up gook and grime and deposits in the tank that are in the water. Now I have pure water straight form the source, not water that has been sitting with deposits in a tank.
For the price this is the best electric water heater on the market. It is way cheaper than going solar which costs over [...]. But if you decide to upgrade and go solar, a tankless is a perfect compliment to bring your solar heater water up to the final temperature if required. So a tankless is not a wasted purchase if you decide to add a solar heater down the road.
Definitely 5 stars.

Note: The product image is not quite right as it shows another model than the 36.
I installed a Tempra 36 in a new application (not a replacement). It does everything it says it does and without taking up a huge space. It was easy to install and easy to use. The best part of this product is the endless hot water at a preset temperature.
You MUST review the flow rates and temperature rise charts to be sure it is adequate for your application. If you have colder water or want more water for your shower, the unit may only be able to keep up with one, not two or more people taking a shower at the same time. There are no electric units on the market that are as powerful as the propane ones, so make sure you've done your homework before installing.
The unit WILL draw its rated power (36kw) if you ask it to, so make sure you have enough power. It takes THREE 60 amp breaker PAIRS, which is a LOT of panel space. Check this also before installing.
In operation the thing works flawlessly and does exactly what it says in the manual. The one control, temperature set, is trivial to use. I figure the cost to run it is about $4.32/hr at our rate of about 12 cents/kwh. That's assuming of course you're running it at full draw. How can you beat that? Your own hot spring, virtually, for under $5/hr.
I think I'm in for years of trouble free hot water.
