HBB504 Electric Hydronic Baseboard Heater - 240 Volts - 500 Watts Review

HBB504 Electric Hydronic Baseboard Heater - 240 Volts - 500 Watts
Average Reviews:

The heater itself seems well-made and runs well and heats nicely. It's quiet and retains heat. We replaced an older hydronic unit that died, and this is working well so far.
One big advantage to this unit if you are replacing an old one is the fact that this one can be wired from either the left or right end -- wherever the wire already is. This was probably the biggest selling point for this heater, as we were replacing an old Isotherm (now Cadet) that was wired on the right -- the new Cadets are wired only on the left and we didn't want to have to deal with the complication.
The color is called "Navajo White" and the pictures look fairly white. In reality, the color is more of a light taupe. This was fine for our decor, but don't expect a true white or even an off-white.
When ordering, note that you must also order a thermostat -- there are ones that go on the end of the unit, ones that go on the wall, and ones that go on the wall and will control several baseboard heaters in one room. If you are replacing an existing heater and don't want to either fish wires or do drywall work, be sure to get the type that goes on the end of the unit. Whatever type you get, you must install the thermostat yourself -- it does not come pre-installed.
I'll preface my installation comments by saying that we are typical homeowners, not contractors or otherwise in the building trades. It was the first time my husband did a project like this, but he's reasonably handy. First off, the installation instructions that are included are hard to follow -- they assume a level of expertise we didn't have. However, on the QMark (Marley) web site, if you go to Heaters/HBB Baseboard Heaters, they have a much better .pdf file with photos of all the wiring. It still isn't perfect, but it's a lot better. My husband also commented that calling the junction box "roomy" is a matter of opinion, and while he found it tight, it was sufficient.
The biggest problem is mounting the unit to the wall. You must drill through the back of the heater (the holes are not predrilled) and then screw the heater to the wall (into studs). It's hard to do this without bending the fins on the heater (it's not catastrophic, but better for heat distribution if they're not bent). As every installation is somewhat different, screws are not included -- depending on your application, you may need screws, molly bolts, masonry screws or something else. Be sure to get these before starting the installation.
Also note that you'll need several wire nuts -- you can get them while waiting for the shipment. You need at least two of the type for connecting 2 wires.
It took Dave about 5 hours to install the heater, from unboxing it and removing the old heater to having the new one heating the room. He used a thermostat that went right on the heater. Admittedly, his total time included just under an hour to go buy some wire nuts. If you are more experienced in this type of project, it would probably take less time.
Overall, we're happy with the heater and would buy it again.

The QMark HBB504 Electric Hydronic Baseboard Heater has clean, quiet operation without the noise of a traditional hot water piping system, does not have a noisy blower and is free from the dirt of force-air systems. Efficient and economical, the individual room control provided permits heating only in desired areas or use as a total electric heat source. The Q-Mark HBB504 electric hydronic baseboard heater delivers a steady, uniform comfort level in a room by having low unit surface temperatures, natural convection and large heating fin areas. The sheathed heating element is completely submerged in heat transfer fluid and totally sealed in a copper tube spanning the length of the heater. Even when the unit is switched off, soft warmth continues to radiate because of the maximum heat retention of the hydronic element. The large wiring compartment of the Q-Mark HBB504 baseboard heater is accessible from either end or front, enabling rapid, easy hookup. It also has high-temperature shutoff protection for your safety. Also, the contemporary styling and neutral color blends with any decor. It is three inches deep and mounts flush to the wall and flat on wood, tile or carpeted floor. A ten year limited warranty is included. Optional thermostat must be purchased separately.

These are recommended for those with allergies and nurseries for good reason.
Anyone who wants heat without toxic fumes, this is your best bet. The hydronic core means heat is spread over the area of the pipe, so it doesn't burn dust like the cheaper electrics. The only major outgassing is from some rubber cushions between the pipes and the supports, and from some warning stickers. Removing the cushions is not hard if you have a screw driver. I know someone with severe chemical sensitivities who uses these after washing all of it with soap and pressure hose, then after it's dry running it outdoors for a couple hours to get rid of remaining fumes. If you are less sensitive just remove the cushions and keep the windows open the first hour or so.

General Information: Cadet's premier hydronic baseboard line is recommended for nurseries and bedrooms, and for people with severe allergies. While Softheat offers everyone a comfortably warm room, it was specifically designed to reduce the effects of indoor allergens, compared to other heating systems. Additional benefits include lower operating and surface temperatures and whisper quiet operation. The Softheat hydronic baseboard uses circulating fluid (80% water and 20% Ethylene Glycol) to provide steady, uniform warmth with longer heat retention and minimal temperature variation. No plumbing necessary! Cadet recommends a wall-mounted thermostat for optimum performance, or you may prefer the convenience of an optional field mount thermostat kit (Left end wiring only). Technical Information: Heater is constructed of 22 gauge steel for durability and powder coated for a quality finish. Baseboard heaters work best when placed under a window and at least 12" from furniture or other objects. Keep at least 12" minimum from objects hanging above (i.e., drapes). Heater may be placed directly on the floor and mounted to the wall. (Left end wiring only). Ordering Information: SOFTHEAT EBHA heaters require a thermostat. For optimum comfort use a Cadet electronic thermostat or a dual diaphragm thermostat.

HONEYWELL TL8230A1003 Thermostat Electric Heat Digital 7 day programmable Review

HONEYWELL TL8230A1003 Thermostat Electric Heat Digital 7 day programmable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received my order of 5 Honeywell TL8230A1003 Electric Heat Thermostat Line Voltage Digital 7 day programmable thermostats one week after I placed the order. The units arrived well packaged, are solidly built and are much nicer and smaller than they appear onscreen. I had a licensed electrician install all 5 a week ago, replacing my 25-year-old units. The electrician had never seen this particular thermostat before, but because of the straightforward installation guide coupled with his experience, it only took about 20 minutes to install the first unit, and about 15 for each of the remaining 4. Within minutes I had them all programmed!
The Honeywell TL8230A1003 Electric Heat Thermostat Line Voltage Digital 7 day programmable thermostats are incredibly easy to program, and have icons that correspond to different functions (i.e., comfort mode, night mode, away/vacation, manual, etc.). I consider myself to be very "tech-savvy" and don't like to read manuals if I don't have to. With this product, I was able to figure out how to use every function, with minimal time, and without having to study the instructions (which, by the way, is just a front-to-back insert). Further, because they are connected to the heating unit power supply, there are no batteries to change. The only down side to this is that in the event of a power outage, I believe all the programming will need to re-done. Still, it's a minor inconvenience.
The most wonderful thing about these thermostats is the ability to program 4 different times for each day of the week. Though they come pre-programmed, re-programming is completely customizable. For example, for Monday and Tuesday, I can set the three downstairs units to come on at 5AM, go off just before I leave home, come on again an hour before I return and go off again an hour after I go to bed. I set the living room and dining room units to only come on in the evening. For Saturday, I program a totally different set of times, and on Sunday, yet another set of times. The thermostat also has an "On/Off" switch that allows me to turn them off if I don't want the timed setting(s) to come on, as well as a "manual" function that allows me to completely override the programmed setting and increase or decrease the desired temperature. The thermostat is also EXTREMELY QUIET when switching on and off in timed modes, and has a backlighting feature accessible by a long bar-type button on the face of the unit - perfect for checking temps in the dark. Each of the setting buttons is made of non-slip rubber so fingers won't accidentally slide off during programming. The buttons are small, though, and there is no backlighting for the buttons. The only caveat is to be careful not to press the "clear" button unless you actually WANT to clear a setting. This button is not in a separate area of the unit, and I inadvertently cleared one of the programmed times.
All in all, I am very satisfied with this product. What a great feeling to wake up in the morning or come home in the evening to a warm home! And the cost savings as a result of being able to use heat only when and where I need it are sure to be another benefit. I'm so pleased with these new thermostats that I've recommended them to two of my neighbors/friends, and I expect that they will purchase new sets within the next couple of weeks!
To summarize,
Pros:
Small and sleek
Easy and quick to install by licensed technician
Easy-to-understand icons
Nice "green-glow" backlight
Fully customizable programming - up to 4 time settings for each day of the week
Programming buttons have non-slip surfaces
On/Off switch
Extremely quiet
No batteries to replace - ever!
Cons:
No battery backup
Programming buttons are small and not backlit
"Clear" button is not in separate area of the unit

Honeywell YRLV430A1005/U 5-2 Day Programmable Thermostat for Electric Baseboard Heating Review

Average Reviews:

Although I bought this item from Home Depot, it's still the same product at the same price. I'm so satisfied with it, I want to let others with baseboard heating nightmares to know there is a reasonable solution.
If you have baseboard heat, you probably have trouble maintaining a comfortable temperature without constantly messing with the thermostats.
My old non-programmable termostats (tried 3 different models) were never accurate (off by up to 10 deg) and I had to hang thermometers beside them to keep track.
This product ALWAYS warms the room to the tempurature I set it.
The programmable feature allows me to turn it down at night and during the day.
I can literally set it and forget it.
Also too, with a proper program set, I nolonger have to run it all night and day, using less electricity and saving me money.
And with a push of a button I can turn it up or down, on-the-fly.
The next programmed time will set the temperature back on schedule.
There is a "manual mode" if you prefer the temperature to stay the same throughout the day and night.
I'm planning on buying more of these to put in all my first level rooms.
But at $50 each, I'll change them out one at a time.
(The non-programmable version is around $35.)
Installation is easy and can be done in 5 mins.
Took me less than 10 mins to figure out the 7 day program function and get it the way I wanted.
With a built in digital temperature gauge, you won't have to hang your own.
Bottom Line...
The RLV430 just makes sense (and cents). It really works well.
It's very easy to use and install.
I can recommend this item with full confidence that it's one of the best thermostats available for baseboard heated homes.

In theory, liquid-filled heaters are better than other styles, and the Delonghi oil-filled electric radiator space heater I purchased 7 or 8 years ago performed incredibly well under constant and intense use until recently, when the oil started leaking a tiny bit from various hairline cracks in the metal. I purchased a new model Delonghi which, much to my consternation, was a piece of junk unlike its stalwart predecessor, and so I tried this QMARK/Fahrenheat PHH15002. This unit generates _no_ discernible heat on the 'low' setting (truly - you can actually touch the element itself and feel that it is barely lukewarm), and very little on 'high'. People are fond of saying 'watts are watts' and therefore any heaters with equivalent draw are "the same" but clearly there's more to it than that: my old Delonghi at 1500 watts got very hot to the touch and warmed a 200 sf room with no problem, whereas the also 1500 watt PHH15002 barely scores as tepid, and could not heat a closet if its sorry little metal life depended on it.

Lux Products ELV4 Programmable Line Voltage Thermostat Review

Lux Products ELV4 Programmable Line Voltage Thermostat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this thermostat (four of them actually) to replace four 28-year old analog thermostats controlling the baseboard heating in a condo I bought as a second home. These digital units immediately let me set temperatures without having to guess and constantly juggle to get a proper temperature as the old non-digital thermostats required. They hold temperatures within a nice narrow range (although they can be programmed via a dip switch to let temperatures fluctuate a bit more for possible energy savings) for each room. Installation was simple (note that you do want to cap off the second set of wires if you have a 120V system -- read the instructions and note how any existing thermostats are wired to make installation easy). The $2 faceplates which can be ordered separately seem to be necessary to get a finished look on the installation since the thermostats apparently do not mount flush to all boxes.
Each unit takes 2 batteries (AA) so get them before you install the unit. They recommend two major brands and no others -- probably a good idea to follow that suggestion. This is not a "rechargeable battery" setup.

Fahrenheat Electric 5120 BTU Baseboard Heater, Model# FBE15002 Review

Fahrenheat Electric 5120 BTU Baseboard Heater, Model# FBE15002
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The heater I got is made in the USA. Hope they continue to make them here onshore, but gladly, mine doesn't have the toxic fumigants embedded in the paint (and other parts) that other heaters have from the shipping container fumigants they apply to the shipping container interiors when they ship from China (to prevent mold and mildew, and insects in the containers, which are sometimes enclosed for months.) Heat really activates these chemical toxins, embedded in the materials. Those toxic vapors take a while to gas-off of a new heater, and I have enough health problems and headaches without them.
I gassed this unit off at 1500W outside for a few hours and used it at 1000 watts indoors without any problems, and I have severe multiple chemical sensitivity.
The heating element in this portable heater is the same size as a 1000-Watt stationary baseboard. On the 1000-WATT setting (low) it gives a steady nice heat and doesn't get the chassis extremely hot on the outside - probably because of the angle at which the heater stands, which maximizes airflow convection. The housing doesn't even get as hot as a 1000-WATT stationary baseboard, which sits vertically against a wall, not at an angle, like this one does.
The "enamel" paint on all heaters is not really a traditional mineral enamel coating, but a modern polyester imitation, sometimes called "powder coat." It is like when they call eating utensils "silverware" which is mostly stainless steel. Heat this "enamel" paint with a torch and it wont blister or crack, it will melt.
This Marley (aka Q-Mark, farenheat) heater has a good price for a good basic product.
The location of the thermostat is much better the location of the thermostat on a radiator-type stand-up oil-filled heater, all of which are now made offshore as far as I have seen in stores (and therefore very toxic anyway, please let me know if there are still any made in USA.)
In element heaters, there is very little heat at the ends of the element. The heat gradually increases to the middle of the element. The thermostat is at the end. That means element heaters are less likely to effect the control of the thermostat relative to the ambient temperature in the room, which will have more effect on the thermostat than it will with a hydronic (oil-filled) heater, especially radiator-types. That makes the element heater far better for heat control and moderation.

We use these heaters as a source of energy efficient heating for over 4 years now at our inn. They have an adjustable feature that supplies electricity to the silicone filled element to produce heat and then cut off the power when the silicone fluid gets hot. This feature saves energy. We also benefit from only heating those areas we want to keep warm by using zone versus central heat.
We bought them to reduce our usage of the central propane hot air furnace and have saved money by only heating areas needed and reducing propane usage.
They also help keep our yurts comfortable in the winter.
