I bought several of them. Used them in both the floating & sinking versions. They all shorted out the first season and are now in the garbage.
Need to mention that the "clips" for attaching the cords to the side of the tank are included. I bought extra clips and didn't need them.

(More customer reviews)This product is crap. It burned out in two weeks. I used it for a very small water garden and I plugged it in just prior to going on vacation. Upon my return it had failed miserably and is now in a large block of ice. The Western NY weather being what it is I will have to wait until spring to get it out...I have contacted Amazon about the return, we'll see how that goes. Also I contacted the company and they had a very curt reply about returning it to Amazon, not them. Be wary of this product and keep in mind, if it fails the ice can damage your garden,pond,trough,etc. I gave it a two because it actuall worked for a week or so.

Farm Innovators Heated Pond Saucer Model PS-200, 200-Watt Review

The unit stopped working and a coil melted through the plastic. Customer service (800-277-8401) was called and they express shipped a new unit. Very friendly, great service. Hopefully the second unit will not fail.
Would recommend.

(More customer reviews)Bought this for my 700 gallon pond after the Farm Innovators Heated Pond Saucer Model PS-200, 200-Watt deicer started to trip my GFI after only 2 months of use! (After taking that one from the water, could hear water slooshing around inside the disk.)
Seems like a good design because of the option to have it float or not, the 250 watt option and it's not a disk that will eventually leak in water.
I was leery of buying this because it said it is for a stock tank but the coils are surrounded so I don't see a way that it could damage a pond liner.
This one has kept the water open for the 1-2 months since I've bought it. I just hope I'm able to use it next year!

P418 POND FLOAT DEICER 1250W Review

(More customer reviews)I have 100 gallon plastic in ground pond which is only 18" deep and is approximately 4'W x 7'L. Currently it's -6 below and none of the Pond has iced over. I see our fish directly under the heater when it's cold. I keep the water circulating 24/7 in the pond with a pond pump which also has a fountain head in the middle of the pond. Recently we had over 36" of snow and the pond was burried in a drift. There was a 9" or so portion of the pond that was kept open. Most of the pond was slush in the water but my fish came through it all with no problem. I think it was due to the combination of the circulating water and the heater as well. I would recommend this pond heater to anyone who has a plastic preformed pond. None of the pond has froze even in sub zero temps which I find amazing and I'm sure this Pond Heater has helped keep it Ice Free.
Update: 2/15/2009
Since this time I have had three of these things and I won't purchase another since they only last one season. In fact the last one I bought didn't last that long. When it works it works great but just not long enough for me to justify the purchase. I'm keeping my pond ICE free with the fountain with the head removed, and a waterfall just to keep the water circulating. I wish I could change the stars I gave originally but it won't let me.

(More customer reviews)The items arrived on time and in good shape. However, the ad says nothing about needing an optional guard to use it in a non-metallic pond(Who has a metal pond?). This had to be ordered separately from another retailer and this took another 2 weeks. I do not recommend this item if you must use it in a mall space as the guard is HUGE.

This de-icer is designed to float in the water tank and is thermostatically controlled with an automatic shut-off.The styrofoam float is completely enclosed within a rugged plastic housing. The cord exits from the top of the unit. This gives the heater added stability and it is less likely to tip the tank. 1000 watts, 120 volts with 6-foot cord for use in ponds.

(More customer reviews)I have tried a lot of heaters/ de-icers, including trough heaters. All were similar in wattage. Most did not work well or were unreliable. I have used this one for the last 2 winters and not only did it work great, it kept a wide area open except in very cold with high wind. Even then it kept the immediate area open. Their guide was very helpful, I bought the wattage they suggested for my zone (N. IL). I am buying another one now as a back-up, in case I can't find it later. I use it with a thermo cube to cut down on unnecessary running.
